Imagine A Mixed-Media Challenge

Happy Friday, everyone! Today I'm popping in to share a project. A colorful and whimsical card for the Splitcoaststampers Mix-Ability challenge this week hosted by little ole me! 

Our challenge is to use a type of fold or window, an opening of sorts, that we haven't tried before. Keeping with the guidelines of mixed-media, this challenge is pretty wide-open to try out! 

The never tried portion of this card today was the interactive shutter inside the card. I'm sure I've made a gate-fold before, but it's still a rare fold for me. Check out the tutorial on Splitcoaststampers.

Bright acrylic paints and whimsical Laurel Burch stamps are the pieces that make my shutter gatefold card sparkle! See the project supplies and instructions below.

Instructions:

1. Create a monoprint. Per monoprint plate unpacking and use instructions to create a layered monoprint. Start with Olive Green and Gold Yellow paint, brayer, and pull a print. On another sheet of white paper pull second print to use for another project. Without cleaning, add magenta and little amount of white paint and spread with prayer. Lay down the stencil and pull the print on the first one done with green and yellow.
2. After monoprint is dry stamp Script onto paper with Onyx Black ink.
3. Use Shutter Gatefold Tutorial.
4. Stamp the sentiment from Laurel Burch Imagine Butterflies set onto Mixed Media White Paper and cut with a circle die. Use color cardstock and other circle dies for the mat.
5. Stamp the smallest butterfly from Laurel Burch Imagine Butterflies set onto an unused section of the monoprint and die cut out. Stamp the larger butterfly on color cardstock and die cut out, stamping the antennae and hand trimming. Glue onto the larger butterfly.

Curious About Curios?

In January Stampendous introduced this super product with some of the sweetest stamp designs so that we can not only stamp, but store them as decorations. They are called Curios and you'll love the colorful images mounted on wood blocks that silhouette it's high quality gray rubber stamp!

My project today uses the tweet little bird from Fran's artist sketch style stamps. It's called Tweet One.

I loved the idea of this little blue bird perched around in my room. It's like bringing in a bit of spring into my craft industry world!

Instructions:

1. Tape Thicket Metal Stencil over Mixed Media White Paper and color randomly with Pear Tart and Bamboo Leaves. Remove stencil and rotate slightly to tape down again and repeat stenciling with Teal Zeal and Cottage Ivy.
2. Mat stenciled layer onto color cardstock and adhere to card base.
3. Stamp Tweet One with black ink onto Mixed Media White and color with Prismacolor watercolor pencils.
4. Trim with scissors and adhere with foam tape.
5. Stamp Brushed Wishes sentiment with black ink onto white paper and trim with Fitted Frame die, repeat die cut with larger frame on color cardstock.
6. Layer sentiment and frame and adhere with foam tape to card base.

Dreamweaver Doubles

Happy Monday Morning! It's a new week and the Stampendous design crew have been up to double task. It's all about using a stencils and how to get the most out of them.

Today I'm sharing something that I was so excited to finish, because it came together so quickly and it has all the design elements I was hoping to get in for the finished card.

My Dreamweaver Double is using the same stencil with two different techniques. The first is stenciling with ink and the second is adding a "clear coat" of embossing paste.

Let's get started on how I made my card for today.

1. Tape down two corners of white paper onto work surface.
2. In one corner of the paper lay down stencil and tape all four sides, starting with the top of the stencil first (this will be a hinge and make it easier to remove the stencil)
3. Dab a natural handle stencil brush on an ink pad and rub on plastic or non stick surface to blend it on all the bristles.
4. Add ink into stencil design with a circular motion. Clean and dry brush before moving on to the next ink color.
5. Clean tape with baby wipe of stamp cleaner sprayed onto paper towel and remove from stencil. Reserve the tape to the side to clean and dry stencil.
6. Align stencil over inked design and tape back down.
7. Apply Translucent Embossing Paste with palette knife onto the long edge of the stencil with the tape as the staging area.
8. Slowly swipe the paste across the stencil with Paste Spreader at a 30 degree angle. If portions of the stencil are missing paste, dab a little back on with the palette knife and swipe with paste spreader again.
9. Return unused paste to container and clean rim before closing the lid for storage.
10. Let the paste dry completely until it appears clear and then adhere to card base.
11. Stamp the house trio from Family Home stamp set with Memento ink and heat set with heating tool.
12. Apply mask to doors and windows with the masking pen and let dry completely.
13. Apply pigment ink with sponge to homes and also the two green inks to a small narrow rectangle of white paper.
14. Remove mask by rubbing off with finger and wipe away with dry cloth.
15. Add more color with colored pencils if desired.
16. Trim house trio and adhere with foam squares to circle cut out of color cardstock. Adhere to card.
17. Die cut grass from green sponged paper.
18. Stamp sentiment with black ink onto grass. Adhere with foam squares just below house trio and hide a few grass blades under one of the doors.

Frilly and Fabulous Mixed Sentiments

I've been feeling a little mashed up lately with all the changes going on in my world, all good or at least they are normal, so it was the spark to my challenge this week as I host the Mix-Ability challenge on Splitcoaststampers.

Sometimes you just can't find the right sentiment and you really need the one that just won't go away in your mind. So why not create your own, right? Now we can be challenge to figure out our stash of sentiments, alphabet stamps whether they are stencils, stamps, rub-ons, magazine cut-outs. Let's see how creative we can be.

I have a lot of mashed-up parts to my card today, so when you look at the sentiment you're seeing only the MIX107 challenge. Here's what else is going on with this card.

Stampendous has a weekly theme for their Swirls and Flourish stamps, so you will see a flourish in the Vintage Letter background stamp, and clear embossed Elegant Scroll in two of the corners.

The Dreamweaver Dream Team challenge this month is Frilly and Fabulous so I have frilled with vintage lace edging and used my fabulous Mosaic Swirls stencil and some color spray.

Instructions:

1. Fold a 5 1/2 x 11 inch charcoal cardstock in half for a finished 5 1/2 inch square top folding card base. Set aside.
2. Stamp at an angle, Vintage Letter with Onyx Black ink onto watercolor paper trimmed to 5 x 5 inches.
3. Dry with heat tool and dust with anti-static bag.
4. Stamp Elegant Scroll with Versamark Watermark ink onto watercolor paper, sprinkle with clear embossing powder, shake off excess back into container and heat set with heat tool.
5. Color edges with side of oil-pastels and rub, then with a wet paintbrush spread pigment our towards the center.
6. Set stencil on watercolor paper, pressing down as you spray with coffee water in spray/splatter bottle. Set aside to dry.
7. On kraft paper stamp first word of sentiment from Vintage Lowercase with Rich Cocoa ink. Dry with heat tool and dust with anti-static bag.
8. Ink second word with watermark ink and stamp overlapped onto first word, then heat emboss with Detail White embossing powder the same way the clear embossing was done.
9. Use oil pastels on edges of sentiment, smearing with finger or piece of paper towel. Smear with wet paintbrush.
10. Stamp a section of Vintage Letter around sentiment, and heat set so the wax will evaporate from the oil pastel and set the ink. Blot away ink that does not set.
11. Mat sentiment with charcoal paper and glue onto watercolor paper. (Tip: Lay the watercolor paper at an angle on the card base to be able to align the sentiment panel straight.with the card base. See photo of card for help.)
12. Lightly sprinkle Chunky Copper Embossing Enamel on two side of the card, removing any that fall onto sentiment words. Use the Encrusted Jewel Technique to heat set enamel.
13. Wrap vintage lace edging around watercolor paper twice and tie in a bow.
14. Glue watercolor paper onto card base.

I saw the Dreamweaver Stencils I received it was going to be a traditional color Christmas card all the way.

1. Tear and adhere Vintage Green cardstock onto bottom of A7 Kraft card.
2. Dry emboss the Xmas Tree stencil with a burnisher/stylus onto Chalk Core cardstock and then sand with the Sand-It Set.
3. Add contrast by replacing the stencil over the sanded image and using white paint and a stencil brush to highlight areas of the tree.
4. Glue down to card base.
5. Adhere torn strip of Vintage Ruby cardstock along the bottom of the card.
6. Stamp Vintage Couple with Versamark Watermark ink onto vellum and then cut out and place on the card with Thin 3D Foam Black Squares (Scrapbook Adhesives)
7. Add differing sizes of DODZ adhesive dots around the tree in three successions for each color of glitter.
8. Use a Big Brush pen to draw a rough border line on the chalk core cardstock.
9. Glitter the star last, because it's always the last thing to be added. :)

Dream It Up with Stampendous for my Inspirations

It's the fourth day of our Stampendous Stamps and Dreamweaver Stencils collaboration and I've just been thrilled to see so much inspiring ways to combine our talents and products. I hope you have also had a great time walking through the blogs each day and getting familiar with some new to you products as well as new ways to use them.

It's also the fourth week of my guest designing spot with the Dreamweaver Stencils Team and I'm so glad to have been a part of this fun group of designers. Thank you ever so much for YOU inspiring me through your designs.

Now are you ready for my collaboration card?

I've combined flowers from Cling Blossom Beauty, coordinating Blossom Beauty Die Cuts in  and the butterfly from Butterfly Tune Rubber Stamp with some splash of color using Prismacolor Pencils.

The textured background is something that I played around with and ended up loving and waiting for the right design to come along and include it. To my delight this combination just went so well together. Let me tell you how it was created.

I started out with a monoprint page using the Creative Palette and acrylic paints. The embossed design is done with the LJ929 Pop Rectangles Stencil and Translucent Embossing Paste. Once that was dry a brown acrylic paint was brushed around the page and rubbed off in a circular motion to push the paint into the edge of the embossing. It turned out so well I'm going to be doing that more often. 

A classic sentiment is stamped from the Loving Messages Stamp Set and tucked in under a flower.

This is going to be a fun fun week! I get to join my guest design team partnering with my regular design team at Stampendous!!!!!! All week long we are going to bring you the best of stamping and stenciling with some fun and amazing products. Here's a mixed media journal page from me. In order to be comfortable with all the elements, I created them in layers by doing a Creative Palette monoprint background on deli paper and glued it into my journal binder. There are Dreamweaver embossing paste elements on the background as well, with swirls, flowers and hearts. The Blossom Beauty head is stamped onto white cardstock and cut out around a pencil tracing from the set's coordinating template (really cool). It's then cut out and used to sketch out the hairstyle on more monoprint paper and detailed with black permanent markers. 

This week's Stampendous focus is the Blossom Beauty and the Dreamweaver Stencils team will be bringing us some great projects, too. Dream It Up with this months Inspirations Challenge

My inspiration is from this wonderful little Dreamweaver Stencil flower called Plumeria Crest. The fact that I have never seen a plumeria in real life almost makes this flower more intriguing to me. It's a favorite flower of mine. (Here's a photo of this beautiful flower.)

Now here is what I've created for today!

I started this colorful panel with the Pop Rectangle die and sponged Shabby Shutters and Shaded Lilac onto white cardstock. Then I added the Plumeria Crest with Pink Persimmon and let some of my sponging fall off the outside of the stencil edge. I liked the extra spot of color to go with the flowers.

The rest is just dressing with black paneled on both sides of the stenciled piece and some gray embellishments with a single shiny pennant.

Now let's see how the inspirations fell through Dreamweaver Stencils with the design team and some new members to the team.

Copper DREAMweaver Inspiration

Dream It Up! Thursday is here and the inspiration for my project today came full circle. The Dreamweaver Team, and myself are sharing what inspires them when they create. We would love for you to join along and link your projects (and inspiration) to the inlinkz tool on the Dream It Up! blog

I get inspired by the product almost always and today project was inspired by Dreamweaver Stencils Metallic Copper Embossing Paste. In all comical sense I thought I'd better try and make a little more effort for my inspiration so I went to Pinterest and found this image in a few places.

And so we end the inspiration circle with my project today.

Here's how I made it.
I started on some kraft paper and embossed the Pop Rectangles with Matte Black Embossing Paste and set it aside to dry. I embossed the sentiment with Small Thanks and Metallic Copper Embossing Paste.

As soon as the Black Matte Embossing Paste was dry I went over it with the Metallic Copper Paste using the dried paste as my stencil edge. For a completed look and to cover any metallic paste I went back over the Black Matte with a second layer.

That's it and it was pretty simple to put together. As I mentioned before, my inspiration went full circle. As I was adding the product image to this post I couldn't help but notice that the label also has resemblance to my finished card. I guess we'll never really know where the inspiration came from, right?

It's a great month and it comes with an exciting announcement. I am thrilled to be this month's guest designer with Dreamweaver Stencils.

I would love to say that I have a favorite Pin Board or a go-to crafter for my inspiration today, but I almost always get my inspiration from the tools and supplies I'm about to use. There must be a little tickle when I see something that generates the design. Meet my gecko in the Rain Floor.

All the paper has been colored with the use of my stack of monoprint paper made with the Creative Palette Plate and acrylic paint.
