It's time to reveal a little more about my journey, if you're curious read on. For an explanation of the cards in this post, go to the end of the post. 

In over a year I've scaled back my crafting to essentials and focused on the health of my neck, back and nutritionally everything.  Years ago I tore the cartilage in my hip, had surgery and did barely nothing to get myself back to better than before the injury. About the same time I had severe neck pain that caused reference pain and numbing down to the hand on my dominate side, the side that I use to write, draw, blowdry my hair, etc. I used all my energy and effort to take care of my family and do stamped greeting cards for the design teams I was on. It was a crazy cycle that I didn't know how to end. I just couldn't imagine leaving the hobby that I love to make my body healthier because stamping made my mental health happy, or so I thought. It began to drag me down in every aspect. I tried physical therapy and exercise to get my physical aspect better but repeatedly hurt myself and was setback to the beginning of my efforts. 

It’s now 2023 and I’ve continued towards better health. Shedding weight through a program called Code Red Lifestyle with improved diet and getting pass a lot of hurdles with my body joints, I’m able to do more and more crafting.

Vignette it Your Way

Hi friends! I was so fortunate to drop into my art studio and get some fun sentiment cards done. It just gives me warm fuzzies when I can do that. Today these cards are for the Splitcoaststampers challenge forum, Mix-Ability!

I have three cards to share that came together rather quickly for two reasons. I have a pile of monoprints ready to use and three new die cuts that I was so happy to get at a local, walk-in-the-door craft store! I'm so glad they are still open!

Lawn Fawn has quite a few "Giant" Lawn Cuts that make for a jiffy card session. I have Giant Sending Big Hugs, Giant Thank You, and Giant Happy Birthday.

Each one of my cards attempts to create a vignette. I say attempt because art and mixed media specifically can be jolted into different directions. 

Sending Big Hugs is a monoprint on deli paper inspired by the amazingly talented Birgit Koopsen. I made a vignette or transition by painting whirling lines. I meant to cut the paper along the lines, but when I realized I was gluing my layer on the base I had already cut it into a rectangle. 

Thank you is a transition with simple lines to hide the abrupt edge of the bubble background mat layer. That background is from when I hosted the MIX468 challenge. It isn't noticeable in the photo but I used Spectrum Noir Sparkle Brush Pens so it twinkles it's Thank You.

Happy Birthday is another monoprint that I did for a challenge and loved it but needed to wait for the right card to use it. I believe it's from the MIX460 challenge and just trying to play with brush strokes.

Imagine A Mixed-Media Challenge

Happy Friday, everyone! Today I'm popping in to share a project. A colorful and whimsical card for the Splitcoaststampers Mix-Ability challenge this week hosted by little ole me! 

Our challenge is to use a type of fold or window, an opening of sorts, that we haven't tried before. Keeping with the guidelines of mixed-media, this challenge is pretty wide-open to try out! 

The never tried portion of this card today was the interactive shutter inside the card. I'm sure I've made a gate-fold before, but it's still a rare fold for me. Check out the tutorial on Splitcoaststampers.

Bright acrylic paints and whimsical Laurel Burch stamps are the pieces that make my shutter gatefold card sparkle! See the project supplies and instructions below.

Instructions:

1. Create a monoprint. Per monoprint plate unpacking and use instructions to create a layered monoprint. Start with Olive Green and Gold Yellow paint, brayer, and pull a print. On another sheet of white paper pull second print to use for another project. Without cleaning, add magenta and little amount of white paint and spread with prayer. Lay down the stencil and pull the print on the first one done with green and yellow.
2. After monoprint is dry stamp Script onto paper with Onyx Black ink.
3. Use Shutter Gatefold Tutorial.
4. Stamp the sentiment from Laurel Burch Imagine Butterflies set onto Mixed Media White Paper and cut with a circle die. Use color cardstock and other circle dies for the mat.
5. Stamp the smallest butterfly from Laurel Burch Imagine Butterflies set onto an unused section of the monoprint and die cut out. Stamp the larger butterfly on color cardstock and die cut out, stamping the antennae and hand trimming. Glue onto the larger butterfly.

1. Stamp Puddles Boots with Tuxedo Black ink onto Mixed Media White Paper and color.
2. Watercolor resist background paper, let dry.
3. Glue resist paper to Mixed Media Paper card base (5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch cardstock, folded)
4. Glue Puddle Boots onto the card front.

Cute Boots Card

1. Stamp Cute Boots with Clair Nocturne ink onto Mixed Media White Paper.
2. Trim the sentiment using Q size Fitted Frame die and glue to watercolored outer Q size Fitted Frame die.
3. Watercolor the resist background paper, dry and glue to Mixed Media Paper card base (5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch cardstock, folded).
4. Glue sentiment onto the card front.

Paste Not Waste Your Way to Crafting Time

In a time before kids, I would look for something out of my regular routine to do. My mother-in-law mentioned that a few teacher friends were going to take a bookbinding class she thought I would be interested in also taking so I jumped at the chance and was delighted by it. Not only did I learn a few small bookbinding techniques, but I was also fascinated by the paste paper process.

Trying to be creative with what we have for the Splitcoaststampers Mix-Ability challenge, I decided to combine the technique of paste paper and unused stamped rejects. No matter how hard I try these days I'm always making a mistake stamping, I will inevitably smudge or blur the stamped image... yes, even with a stamp positioner. 

Mix-Ability Challenge MIX332: Paste Not Waste

Here's my process as best I could photograph it out, but first tips on the paste making process. Links are at the end of this post for credits, recipes, and other tutorials.

I searched the internet, and here are a few thoughts:

• Cooked paste is smoother than raw (think paper mache recipes), but nowhere did it say that one is better than another for the end result.
• Start with a thicker ratio of starch to water like 1:6 respectively, then if you want a little bit more fluid paste, add more water in the temperature the recipe calls out. (See photo 1)
• Use a binder of some sort. The recipe I used at Lil Bookbinder (link below in credits) had ground alum and an acrylic medium which is supposed to help bind the colorant to the starch. (Photo 2)
• Use a plastic table cover. I have a thick clear table vinyl on my work table, so it was easy to clean up.

• Catalyst Tools (a.k.a. tools that make designs) - use whatever you have on hand. In a pinch, you can cut designs out of plastic loyalty cards and even chipboard. Here are the tools I used (Photo 3).

Let's get started!

• I started with one page that I had a hard time stamping a full image and just kept stamping in all angles until it was filled up.
• For this post, I did other pages so you can see that any stamp will work, whether it is a background stamp or a few single stamps. (Photo 4)

• After the stamping is done, start making paste paper. With a clean brush, apply a layer of water on the backside and then the front  (Photo 5)

• While the paper is damp, paint the paste onto the paper (Photo 6). You can use just one color or two or three, just keep in mind that mixing complementary colors will result in browns and dull colors (Photo 7). If that occurs lightly swipe it up with a wet paper towel.

• Use your mark, making tools to create designs in the wet paste. See the next five photos for marking ideas and click on them to see in the original size.

• Let the paper dry and begin using it for a super start on your project backgrounds or bookmaking endeavors.

1. Fold in half an 8-1/2 by 5-1/2 inch pink cardstock for the card base.
2. Stamp Peony Umbrella with black ink onto Mixed Media White Paper and color.
3. Stamp the sentiment from Greetings Galore with black ink onto white paper and trim with Fitted Frame die and mat with Lavender cardstock from the outer frame.
4. Mat image with lavender cardstock and adhere to sentiment under the bottom then glue to the card base.
5. Adhere small bow above sentiment.

• Gel Printing Plate (What I used here AZ. Also a good choice AZ)
• Brayer (AZ)
• Static Remover Pad (AZ)

Instructions:

1. Place a drop of each rainbow color onto the gel plate and roll with brayer back and forth.
2. Stamp clean Taj Tile stamp onto paint, press and then remove. Either stamp on scrap paper or clean with soap and warm water.
3. Press Mixed Media White paper onto gel plate and peel away for print. Clean plate or keep creating more prints while all your supplies are out.
4. Spatter water-thinned white paint over gel print, let dry; then create a border with brown and grey paints. Finish with a black marker around the edge about 1/8-inch in from the edge.
5. Brush static remover pad across area that will be embossed.
6. Stamp sentiment with Versamark Watermark ink and sprinkle white embossing powder over it. Tap off excess and return to container. 
7. Heat emboss sentiment. Create shadow with grey paint and liner brush or before embossing sentiment use dark ink to stamp first before brushing paper with static remover pad.

2. Stamp the sentiment using a stamp positioner and black ink onto each layer of card and glue together.

Instructions:

1. Stamp Birthday kid and balloons on Mixed Media White Paper with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and color.
2. Trim out birthday kid and balloons.
3. Die cut Sky cardstock with WindowRama rectangle die, score at 1-inch from both edges.
4. Die cut Yellow Corn cardstock with WindowRama rectangle and square window die. Set aside.
5. Die cut Limelight cardstock with WindowRama rectangle die, then with the smooth hill die from Meadows Edge die set 1-1/4 inch from bottom edge. Fold at the 1-inch score on each side and trim off 1/4-inch off the edge. Glue to inside of Sky rectangle.
6. Glue birthday kid to the right side of the grass.
7. Die cut 6-1/4 x 2 inches Coral, Melon and white cardstock with WindowRama rectangle die. Align the smooth hill die and the grass die next to each other and tape together to die cut along each color cardstock. Cut along grass edge to free fringe. Use score lines to fold and glue to the inside of Sky rectangle.
8. On 1-1/2 square inch piece of Mixed Media White Cardstock stamp sentiment with Memento Tuxedo Black ink.
9. Use smooth and grass hill dies one more time with Lilac Mist cardstock and trim to free fringe.
10. Glue two strips to top of sentiment and trim away any exposed white cardstock above fringe. 
11. Glue to yellow WindowRama rectangle on the bottom left. Glue the trio balloons to top right and left corners.
12. Glue single balloon behind birthday kid hands and onto front fringe garland.

• ZipDry Paper Glue (AZ)
• Foam Squares by Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L (AZ)
• Heat Tool by Wagner (AZ)

Instructions:

1. Fold 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inch blue cardstock in half for card base.
2. Sprinkle Clear Embossing Powder around edges and then sprinkle Shaved Ice over powder. 
3. Heat from the backside of paper just until embossing powder has melted. Set aside.
4. Stamp Manger Cherubim with black ink on Mixed Media White Paper and color.
5. Trim colored image with the inner P Fitted Frame and adhere to yellow cardstock trimmed with outer P Fitted Frame.
6. Add foam adhesive to the back of the colored image and adhere to card base.

Instructions:

1. Stamp both gorillas with black ink onto Mixed Media White Paper and each one on a sticky note. Trim out the chest, face and neck area with scissors and place over stamped images.
2. Stamp heart over gorillas and remove sticky notes. Stamp flower on extra white paper.
3. Color image and flower. Cut out the flower and pop up with Thin 3D Foam adhesive square.
4. Trim image and mat with Red Cherry cardstock
5. Cut Double Dots Pink paper to 4 x 5-1/4 inch and glue onto a folded 5-1/2 x 4-1/4 inch kraft cardstock base.
